After a period of quiet, we are excited to share an update on the incredible progress of the building project in Kabale. But first, a little history…
A Bit of History
In 2012, the Koinonia Kids street children project came to life in Kabale.
It all began with providing meals in the garden of a local church community. This quickly grew into sheltering a few children in a borrowed space, and soon after, we secured a rented house in the city.
We quickly realized that if we wanted to make a lasting impact, we needed to remove the children entirely from the street environment to successfully rehabilitate them.
Most street children in Kabale eventually come into contact with gangs and become addicted to cheap drugs, making the rehabilitation process extremely difficult. For this reason, we sought a location far outside the city.
In 2021, after negotiations with the district office, we were granted a piece of land on the condition that we would develop it. Ten years after our humble beginnings, we proudly opened the first Koinonia House—a boys’ dormitory for street children.
A proud milestone we can't skip sharing!
Since August 2023, the boys’ house has been fully operational, providing a warm and nurturing environment where children are growing, healing, and thriving. It is a sanctuary where every wounded child can find peace and hope, guided by a dedicated and loving team.
Our Latest Milestone: The Girls' House
Thanks to your generous support, we secured enough funds by December 2024 to begin construction on the 4th phase—a brand-new dormitory for girls.
The work progressed rapidly and was closely monitored by Brother George, one of our board members responsible for supervising the construction and keeping the Belgian team updated. This close collaboration ensures smooth progress while keeping costs low.
· Accommodation for a matron (caregiver) who stays overnight
· Located on the same grounds as the boys’ house
Why start with a boys’ house? The majority of street children in Kabale are boys, which is why we began with them. However, girls face equally urgent dangers. Many disappear quickly from the streets, becoming victims of domestic servitude or sexual exploitation.
Unlike the boys’ house (which exclusively shelters former street boys), the new girls’ dormitory will also support girls at risk of becoming street children due to poverty and exploitation.
“Ritah, 13 years old, lives in a cramped rental room with her family. Her parents’ addictions leave little money for food, forcing Ritah to scavenge on the streets. Without intervention, she is one step away from becoming a full-time street child.”
Why We Build in Phases
Our vision includes five structures in total: the Boys’ Dormitory, Girls’ Dormitory, Dining Hall, Kitchen and Drop-in Center (future project). Instead of constructing one large building, we chose to work in phases due to funding limitations. This allows us to begin each section as soon as funds are available, ensuring that every donation is immediately put to work.
How You Can Help
We are close to completing the girls’ dormitory, but we still need support to finish the job!
For the girls’ house, we still need funds for:
· Furniture: Beds, mattresses, bedding, mosquito nets, curtains, and personal storage.
· Sanitary Block Construction.
Our Future Vision:
After 25 years of rescuing street children in Uganda, we want to go even further by focusing on prevention. Our future drop-in center will offer support and training to at-risk children, youth, and parents (e.g., widows or single mothers) by offering courses in practical skills like sewing and cooking to help them sustain their families.
